Shunpiking along the Huron Road

Thursday May 28, 2020

Back by popular demand! After two successful shunpiking trips with Warren Stauch, a well-known retired Geography teacher and RTO member, we have decided to keep the momentum going and continue with Shunpiking along the Huron Road!

We will travel on a day-long narrated tour of the historic Huron Road. The Huron Road, an early Upper Canada colonization road, was built from 1828-1831 by the London, England-based Canada Company to open a million acres of the Huron Tract. It ran from Guelph to Goderich. John Galt, Col. Anthony Van Egmond and Dr. “Tiger” Dunlop were the principals in this important colonization project.

Join us to learn more of the interesting history of the communities along this historic route.

A hot lunch will be provided at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109.

The cost of this trip is $75.00 per person, including taxes and gratuities.

Manitoulin Island: The Storied Land Sunday Sept. 13-15, 2020

Discover the stories of Manitoulin Island as told by the Anishinabek people who are eager to share “Our Story. Through Our Lens.” Experience Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, THE LARGEST ANISHINABEK COMMUNITY ON MANITOULIN ISLAND. Day 1 - We make our way north to Tobermory and travel aboard the Chi Cheemaun Ferry to Manitoulin Island. Our accommodation is the Manitoulin Hotel & Conference Centre in Little Current, a waterfront property that has beautiful walking trails to the downtown area of Little Current. Experience authentic Aboriginal traditions and culture! After our included dinner at the hotel, we experience the spirit of a native storyteller.

Day 2 - This morning, a local guide joins us to bring the story of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory to life with several stops. The story continues to unfold as we enjoy an Anishinabek inspired lunch. The afternoon is fun filled with many stops including: a lighthouse, candy shop and Bridal Veil Falls. We return to our hotel for a free evening to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Day 3 - We begin our journey home and make a stop at the gorgeous Killarney Mountain Lodge for a tasty Georgian Bay regional fish lunch. Afterward we make our way home.
